At the recent i14y Lab Summit 2022 in Berlin, Rohde & Schwarz has showcased as one of the lab’s partners its proven and powerful measurement instruments used to verify the conformance of O-RAN Radio Units and the end-to-end network performance. Led by Deutsche Telekom, the i14y Lab is an industry consortium aimed at accelerating network disaggregation and Open RAN by building a European and German ecosystem of vendors and system integrators. Through early stage collaboration with open lab partners and customers, Rohde & Schwarz is able to adopt its portfolio in accordance with new test requirements.

The R&S TS-RRM-NR 5G conformance test system from Rohde & Schwarz is the first test platform to achieve test platform approval criteria (TPAC) from the GCF certification organization for 5G radio resource management (RRM) at FR2 frequencies. As a consequence, the first RRM conformance FR2 work items have reached “active” status, making them mandatory for mobile device certification. RRM FR2 test cases with one and two angles of arrival (1xAoA and 2xAoA) have been validated in multiple FR2 EN-DC band combinations.

The radio unit activity versus power consumption is monitored using the R&S RTO oscilloscope to detect short power pulses or spikes. The results make it easy to evaluate energy efficiency measures such as advanced sleep modes and provide ratings for radio units based on their power consumption.

The R&S®SGS100A is an RF source designed to meet the requirements of automated test systems. It is available as a continuous wave (CW) source or as a vector signal generator with an integrated I/Q modulator. With its frequency range of up to 12.75 GHz, the vector signal generator version covers the essential digital signals. The CW version can be used as a flexible local oscillator as well as for interference testing against mobile radio standards. The R&S®SGU100A upconverter extends the frequency range to 40 GHz.

Concrete test results for Direct-to-Device testing using SMW200A, FSW, CMW500, and Cobot arm will be illustrated, demonstrating the capabilities of our solutions for lab testing of NR-NTN devices. The talk highlights the integration of satellite and terrestrial networks, enabling initial services while requiring further research.

A new regulation requires all smartphones sold in the European Union from March 2022 onwards to support caller location for 112 emergency calls. To ensure this feature, the devices must be compliant with several positioning systems as outlined by the European Commission.
